Artists Urged to Give Selves Web Presence

Many artists do not understand how easy and effective it can be to create their own Web site. "I'm in my late 40s, and I learned how to do this stuff, and I didn't spend a lot of money," says writer and performer Ronald Ehmke. "Don't wait for somebody to do something that you can do for yourself." Artists can obtain a Web address, site hosting, blogs, and design templates for very little money, and while Web designers may turn their noses up at the elementary level of these applications, they are perfectly effective for the artist who wants to set up an online presence as quickly and easily as possible. There is no danger of art being stolen off of their sites, since the quality that can be downloaded from a Web site is not good enough to be sold or framed. A Web site allows users who have never heard of an artist to come across their work, usually through a search engine. "If you occupy your niche, people are going to come," says George Johnson, co-founder of a Buffalo-area Web site that offers publicity for artists. He says his site gets 28,000 unique visitors each day and that 40 percent of the readers of his blog find it through a search engine.
