5 Factors of an Effective eCommerce Web Site Design

Whatever features an e-commerce Web site has, it primarily must create sales. Without proper design and structure, no amount of powerful features will bring about the desired results. Five factors must be kept in mind while building an e-commerce site. First, be sure to answer the most important question in your customer's mind: "What's in it for me?" Expect customers to be self-centered. Next, content should be organized in some way, whether it is by use, benefit, feature, or size; consider how customers can best find what they are looking for without being hassled by your sales attempts. Third, color and images can be used to generate and exploit a mood that will make clients relax and take their time looking around the site. Next, strive to gain your customer's trust. Credibility is much more important than aggressive sales tactics; beware of over-selling your products, as nothing is less appealing to potential customers. Although e-commerce sites are rather high-tech by nature, a customer does not want to be impressed by the technology at work on a site. In fact they do not even want to know how high-tech the site is, rather they want easy-to-navigate layouts and easy-to-use interfaces. Putting yourself in the customer's shoes is always an effective strategy.
