The Elements of Design
The basic elements of Web design are easily categorized and summarized to provide a better understanding of how to approach the design of your Web page. The Lines and Linework create the boarders and rules of the page. Either horizontal or vertical, the lines help delineate the spaces around elements on the page and increase the viewability of the design. Shapes are any enclosed contour in the design, normally square or rectangular, but not limited to these shapes alone. Images can be used to generate shapes within the design. The Texture of a design creates a feeling of surface with a visual pattern, using either natural textures or artificial designs to create the desired effect. Color is one of the most commonly known design elements, but by no means a required element of any Web page, as its over-use can be distracting. A good practice is to create the design without color, and then add color to enhance the design without overwhelming the viewer. Finally, Direction gives the Web page a sense of movement. A good design leads the eye to each element in a deliberate manner so the viewer sees what the designer wants in the proper order.
